    PATCH WATCH

    The Yuletide Windows-/Office-patching edition

    By Susan Bradley

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, the only sound heard was the click of a mouse. To prevent the Grinch from trashing our PCs, we're taking a final note of the patches that are naughty and nice.

I only found out about this ASLR vulnerability by reading the newsletter (and applied the fixit at once). What is the "ordinary" user who does not read Windows Secrets supposed to do about it? Will this fix be made available through Windows Update, or are such users just left vulnerable?

Users that run Microsoft's Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET), or Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit (which is what I prefer), can configure ASLR protection in those tools.

Just ran WU, and it didn't find the patch.

    While I have KB3104002 installed (9/12/2015), I don't have KB3125869 or have I been offered it.

When was the latter released and does it apply to Win 7 or do I have to open a new thread to get an answer to this ?

How would the average use such as me have known about the manual fix and as I read the second link, that seems more like KB3104002 is a patch for KB3116180 without the need for any other update.

Thanks Susan, I hope you have a decent family break at Christmas and a healthy and peaceful New Year.

In the last Patch Watch it was recommended that the kernel update KB3109094 be left till the end of the month, but I don't see any reference to it in the the latest Patch Watch - is there any further advice on this one please?

Susan gave the go-ahead for KB3109094 in today's newsletter.

It's listed in the Regularly updated problem-patch chart and highlighted.

Thanks, I read down the list of patches a couple of times and didn't see it - it never occurred to me to look in the other columns alongside a different KB number!

I still haven't seen anymore about KB3042058, did I miss it somewhere along the line?

It was never given the go-ahead in Patch Watch, but I installed it on October 16th and haven't had any issues.

I assume that Susan forgot about it as she is a busy lady. Good to know that you haven't had any problems with it jwoods.
If Susan reads these, maybe it will jog her memory to check it out.

I had a heck of a time downloading kb 3125869. When I tried to open it, I got a message asking me what I want to open it with.

Thanks in advance for your help in opening this. Hope everyone has a happy and a healthy New Year!

When I click on the download button at this location, it downloads the file MicrosoftEasyFix55050.msi.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3125869

After it downloads, you should be able to right-click on the file and select Install.
