    Updates to NirSoft utilities

    I've been a fan of portable utilities for a long time, especially ones from Sysinternals (which has been part of Microsoft's TechNet for nearly 16 years) and Nir Sofer.

    I carry these utilities (plus many others, including WSUS Offline Update, REG files, offline installers, etc.) on a 32 Gb USB stick. All these portable utilities are categorised and listed using another portable freeware utility called PStart. It hasn't been updated since 2007 but still performs flawlessly.

    To make both collections (Sysinternals and NirSoft) easier to manage, I use yet another freeware portable utility called Windows System Control Center (abbreviated to WSCC).

    WSCC not only lets me list the Sysinternals and NirSoft utilities, giving information about each one, but also lets me scan both the Sysinternals and NirSoft websites for updates and new additions to each collection.

    I thought I would add this post to let fans of portable utilities know that, whilst Sysinternals has been quiet of late, Nir Sofer has recently released a bunch of updates plus a new utility - MMCSnapInsView - that displays the details of all MMC snap-ins installed on your system.

    Hope this helps...

    Rick: you will be aware that Nir Sofer updates one or more of his utilities on an almost daily basis! Just look at the bottom of http://nirsoft.net/.

    Yes, I was aware but prefer to update my USB utilities stick en masse approx. once a month instead of as and when each update is released. Sysinternals has been quiet since October and I was surprised how many updates there were in a month to the NirSoft collection. I also thought it might help others who weren't aware of some of the other portable utilities like PStart, WSCC and WSUS Offline Updater.

    Rick,

    I've used WSCC for quite a while. Periodically (when I remember) I just run it to update. Quite handy.

    Has anyone used it successfully on Windows 10?

    Do you mean WSCC? There's 3 versions - portable, standard (i.e. an installer) and PortableApps. I've only used the portable version and it appears to work perfectly in Windows 10 Build 10240. Here's a screenshot I took after it had downloaded the Sysinternals and NirSoft utility suites:

    If you mean either the Sysinternals or NirSoft utilities themselves then I don't know... I haven't tried them all.

    If you mean PStart then, yes, it appears to work fine:

    Apologies for my failure to quote the preceding post; I did indeed mean WSCC and intend to use the portable version.
    Thanks very much for the Win 10 assurance.

    I only use the portable version and it runs on Version 1511 (November update) & latest Insider Preview build 11082 here.

    Red face Nir Launcher for your consideration

    Your system looks great. You might want to consider NirLauncher, a NirSoft portable utility that bundles almost all his other utilities with access by a menu.This doesn't have all the functionality of your system, but it simpler. You can update just the one file as needed. The menu also accommodates custom entries. HTH.

    I should have mentioned that I already have it in the same folder as WSCC. However, the reason I didn't mention it was because I haven't used it in a long time. I just checked and it's been nearly 3 years since I last used it. I do agree with you that it's better than WSCC in one respect. My NirLauncher shows my JoeWare Tools.

    I can't for the life of me find how to add the same JoeWare group to WSCC.

    Joeware tool download

    Hi Rick,

    Just a thought:
    I noticed that joeware has got a csv file with the list of utilities on http://www.joeware.net/freetools/versions.txt, which contains for instance:
    exchmbx,01.04.00,2006.04.29,2f373a9c206f5a2794cfc6 93f604d9fe,8d07815581f07b2262a6ba2a213ba7eceff81c4 e
    From the download page, I can see that the download is done using a HTTP POST to http://www.joeware.net/downloads/dl.php, with two input fields (the input field with the name "email" is optional, but the php script might expect an empty value for it):

    <input type="hidden" value="ExchMbx.zip" name="download">
    <input type="submit" value="Download Now" name="B1">

    Not sure if the button's field is used (The name is the same on each download page), but at least replacing value for the "download" field might give you the possibility to execute the dl.php (I would expect the zip file not to be case-sensitive).

    Like I said, just a thought, didn't check this with cURL or similar tools.

    Kind regards Eelco

    I had a WSCC update come through today, updating then gave me 2-3 new tools.

    Me too. I generally run WSCC when I think about it and definitely when I go looking for an appropriate tool.

    Hi Eelco - Since I've retired I rarely need the JoeWare tools (which I sometimes used in work) and only use one or two these days (although I still need/use several of the SysInternals and NirSoft utilities). Thank you anyway for taking the time to post the info.
