Windows 10 installation "Checking for updates" forever

    Any suggestions for this problem?

Microsoft says the solution is to do a clean boot and run the installation again. That made no difference.

If this is an upgrade have you tried the install with your a/v disabled?

Have you tried using the Media Creation Tool? See bottom of page at Get Windows 10.

Hi! Wondering how much time are we talking about "Checking for updates forever". You might try a Windows 10 repair in place. You can use the Media Creation Tool suggested by Joe in post #2 to do that!

False alarm, of a sort. The problem was not that the update step was taking forever, but that the installer undertook a process which takes 15 minutes or more with no visual feedback to show that it was alive.

This marks a new departure for Microsoft. I've grown accustomed to new releases of Microsoft software that sacrifice usability for an improved "user experience," meaning that no matter how hard it is to use effectively, at least it looks good. Now Microsoft seems to have abandoned user experience for something even more abstruse. I suppose I'll adapt.
