Lost text in file (Word 2000)

I need some immediate help if anyone out there is available now.

I have a client who has been working on a multi-page document the past several days. She has suddenly lost all the text except the last word she typed. She is not aware that the text was highlighted and accidentally deleted or that she used any particular key combination that might have deleted it. When checking the file properties, the size is 20KB. The statistics show 1 page, 1 line, 6 characters.

She needs to turn this document in tomorrow.

Does anyone have any ideas about recovering this data?

Thanks!

Hi Nancy,

As long as she hasn't closed the document: Edit > Undo (shortcut Ctrl+Z) ... but I fear this piece of wisdom comes too late?

Re: Lost text in file (Word 2000)

Well, I guess you wouldn't know the file size if she hadn't closed it already. 20kB is close to the minimal size of a Word2000-doc (19 kB), so it doesn't look good.

If you are lucky, she had some crashes in the last days; then this link might help to recover a previous version.

Thanks for your help. I passed the information on to her. I have a feeling she has lost everything.

I was unaware the a Word file with just one word is that large.

Hi Nancy:
In the future (advice is always easier to give in advance, isn't it?), tell your client that when working on important documents, she should use the feature, Tools/Options/Save/Always create backup copy...and then save often. Every times she saves to the hard drive she'll update the backup copy. I admit I don't do it as often as I should, but I use Ctrl+Z a lot.

Straw clutching here. Maybe there's a chance of a copy in the Recycle Bin? Perhaps under a different name?

Or, just in case it was on a LAN- on a LAN backup?
