    Vlookup on two columns

    Hi there

I have a spreadsheet with a date, train and voltage reading and I want to summarise on a separate sheet the most recent reads for each train.
I assume there is some variant on a lookup formula I can use to do this. Am I right? If so what would it be and how would I use it?

    I attach an example.

    Thanks in advance

    Emily,

If I understand your question this should do the trick:

    1. Sort the Data table by Train (ascending) then Date (descending).
    2. Use this formula in D3 of Results then fill down: =INDEX(Data!$A$1:$C$129,MATCH($C3,Data!$B:$B,0),3)

Of course I'd recommend replacing the ranges Data!$A$1:$C$129 and Data!$B:$B with Named Ranges.
