Customized Keyboard shortcut doesn't work (Word 97 SR2)

I have created a global template to allow saving to a specified location via either a toolbar or a keyboard shortcut. This is for use with forms created via a Word form template and emailed to the user. Both the toolbar button and the keyboard shortcut reference the same macro code.

Both the toolbar and the keyboard shortcut work when the form (.doc) is emailed from an outside location (the internal reference to the original template no longer exists.) But, if the form includes the reference to the original template, only the toolbar works (the keyboard shortcut does not work.)

The user finds it more comfortable to use keyboard shortcuts due to a wrist problem. Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem?

Re: Customized Keyboard shortcut doesn't work (Word 97 SR2)

Hi jacroney:

Coincidentally, I recently checked behavior of keyboard shortcuts, as I haven't found it documented well. (At least, I couldn't find it)

Keyboard shortcuts should work in this priority:
1. the document itself
2. the attached template
3. global templates & add-ins in alphabetical order
4. normal.dot

(I actually need to test the last two a little more thoroughly). One thing I noticed is that if you have a keyboard shortcut in one of the items on the above list, and you delete the shortcut, Word treats that deletion as an assignment.

e.g. If you set Alt+S to mean apply Style 1 in a document & set Alt+S to apply Style 2 in the normal template, the shortcut will apply Style 1 in that document. If you remove that shortcut in the document, that will NOT restore the shortcut to Style 2 for that document...Alt+S will do nothing.

What might be happening is that the shortcut was removed from the document or from the users attached template.

One thing you can do is either assign the shortcut to the document or send the attached template to the recipient.

Hope this helps.

Thank you!

This was the tip I needed to head me the right direction. When I assigned the macro as a different keyboard shortcut, the macro works for all files. Apparently the keyboard shortcut had been previously used and deleted (since I wasn't able to locate it.)

Again, thanks!

This link suggests that 3 and 4 should be swapped (though it wouldn't suprise me if the documentation from MS is wrong):

Therefore, Word resolves such conflicts in the following order of priority:
1. Template attached to the active document
2. Normal template
3. Additional global templates
4. Add

Thanks for the link, Klaus. You've opened up a whole new set of reading for me. Now I have something to do (between 2 & 4 AM)

And I think you may be right about switching #s 3 & 4 in my previous post. However, here's what I find puzzling. Suppose you have a global template, say global.dot (& I believe this would be true for any add-in also). I can open the global template, go into the Customize dialog box, & change, say, Ctrl+F4 from DocClose to AllCaps, & save the change in global.dot. However, contrary to the Resource Kit, the change WILL affect new documents based on the normal template, despite the fact that you saved your changes only to global.dot. If you now look at the assignment of keys in the normal template, it shows that Ctrl+F4 was changed in the normal template. Yet, when I exit Word, I do not get a prompt to save normal.dot, despite having Tools/Options/Save set to prompt for changes.

It's no wonder I get no sleep.
