Laptop + Win XP + CRT monitor

Can anyone tell me how (if possible at all!) under Win XP to set different resolutions on a laptop (Sony Vaio FX405 in this case) and an attached CRT monitor (Taxan Ergovision 980). Obviously the native resolution of the laptop (1024 x 768) is pretty low on the CRT (normally set to 1280 x 1024).

There are two ways to get to the same place: Right-click on your desktop and select properties, or go through the Control Panel to Display settings.

Once you arrive at the dialog box, click on the Settings tab, and adjust the screen area to your liking. This is highly dependent upon the display driver - it must support that resolution - but you should be able to get there.

Many thanks for your help Mark.

Unfortunately it seems to be rather more complicated than you suggest. Under Setttings/Advanced/Displays (dual monitor feature), two monitors (1 & 2 or primary & secondary) are displayed once the laptop is connected to an additional CRT monitor. However, it does not then seem possible to set the CRT on a higher resolution than the laptop screen. The only setting that produces a reasonable display on the CRT is the native laptop one. Higher settings are shown as available, but produce a worse result or, in some cases, instablity.

You can create two hardware profiles: with and without external monitor. For step-by-step instructions how to create hardware profiles click Start | Help and support and type "Hardware profile" in the Search window.

Thanks very much for the suggestion. Certainly sounds like the right approach.
