Windows 98

I have just upgraded from windows 95 to windows 98 with no problems. After down loading data files from McAfee, my computer will not work. It loads up to the picture of Windows 98 and stops. How to I load Windows 98 from my hard drive? I find that win will not work. I can get to my c drive using the back up disk, but need to load windows 98 to see if that will correct the problem. Any help?

    Uh oh. McAfee strikes again.

When your computer is starting, press the F8 key just after the BIOS message appears, and you should get a boot menu. Go into Safe Mode and see if you can remove the update you installed. In fact, it might not be a bad idea to remove McAfee entirely while you're there, and ensure that you have a bootable machine.

If your Windows 98 files are on the hard drive, you can also run the System File Checker from safe mode, and let it look for corrupt files.

And last but not least, there should be a file named BOOTLOG.TXT on the C: drive. If you can post that to the boards as an attachment, it may give us a clue as to what went awry.

...and once you have the computer up and running again, uninstall McAfee and try Trend Micro's PC-Cillin. After dealing with corrupted definition updates and boot-up problems from McAfee and application conflicts from Norton for years, I've found an AV program that doesn't cause more problems than it solves. Runs on half the resources as the big two, updates definitions automatically without rebooting (maybe just in W2K), and has been around since 1988 to major accolades. No $ interest in the company or otherwise, just an interest in ending people's misery.
