Setting File Associations in Windows 10

I want to make Notepad++ my default editor for *.txt files and some others.

However, when I try either of the methods suggested until Settings/Apps/ the OS will not allow me to set that program as the default! It only wants to let me use Notepad or Word pad which both come from Micro$oft.

How do I add a program to the suggestions under "Choose default apps by file type" or "Set default by app"?

Or is there another way? What am I missing?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Try using Control Panel instead of Settings. Control Panel | Programs | Default Programs | Make a file type always open in a specific program.

Did you try setting it via:
Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a File Type or Protocol with a program

It gives a lot more options for file type association if you click on more apps including "look for another program than Settings > System > Default Apps.
