    Windows Updates failure

About 5 hours ago I attempted to download WU patches to my Vista SP2 laptop but after about 3 hours WU was still "checking for updates".

I restarted the laptop to Vista SP2 thinking there might have been a networking problem then retried WU, but same result (never-ending "Checking for updates").

I then booted into Vista SP2 on one of my workbench PCs and ran WU to check for updates but same result; has been 'checking' now for about two hours.

But hey Whoa, after >2hr my Vista laptop now says it has found "32 Important updates are available" so the problem might have been a temporary problem with the M$ WU servers.

Nevertheless my workbench Vista SP2 is still "Checking for updates" after more than an hour.

I had a similar experience while upgrading a laptop from XP to 7, via Vista. I ended up using one of the alternatives to Windows Update. After doing that, eventually Windows update fixed itself.

Well it is now several hours and both the Vista laptop and the Vista PC are continuing "Checking for updates". This is ridiculous. But will leave both systems on overnight to see what results.

Sounds like a good decision. If it doesn't work, maybe try WUSUS offline.

Does wercon.exe report anything and what firewalls are running on the machines - but it may be as you suspect - MS servers, as there have also been complaints about checking for updates hanging in Win 7 as well.

Suddenly the Vista laptop has finished checking for updates and is now downloading/installing 24 updates.

But the Vista workbench PC is still "Checking for updates...".

Nothing in logs re install crashes and am running only Windows Firewall.

Vista on laptop eventually installed <> 22 updates but after a reboot wanted to check for updates again, so still "Checking for updates..." sigh...

I was going to suggest going for a Fosters but you must be pulling an all-nighter on this.

You'd think it would have found all of the updates first time without having to go looking for more - perhaps it took pity on you and gave you some to go at

No Tom, it's been too many hours now and still "Checking for updates..." on both systems. Bedtime here, time has run out (1:03AM). Will try again tomorrow.

I have recently had W7 spend hours looking for updates. I have wondered if the W10 related updates I have blocked (some of which are WU related) have contributed towards this .
