Unhappy Multiple upgrade attempts failed from 8.1

Running 8.1 and getting the Upgrade to 10 prompts, I thought I would give it a go. System getting on, but still well within spec. After several attempts, that result in an 8007005 error, apparently down to permissions. I tried removing software that hooks into the OS (like a lot of Stardock products), disabling virus checking, various methods of resetting permissions, running dism.exe (as elsewhere in these forums), sfc, etc. All to no avail. So I thought I'll download using the MCT, but that refuses to even start on my PC. I tried downloading onto my work laptop and MCT ran and the download went through, but the install onto a USB drive (empty 8GB) failed.
Sorry, don't have all the details to hand, will add as requested (posting from work and the issue is on my home PC).
Looks like I'm stuck with Win 8.1 unless anyone has any great ideas.
    Help!
    Cheers

8GB is not enough, try a 16GB. I have Windows taking 11GB on my 16GB stick.

    The MCT shows:

My W10 Pro x64 installer USB, created using the MCT, fits easily on a 4GB stick with over 600MB spare.

I also downloaded the ISOs and the x64 version was only 3.2GB, the x32 version even smaller.

Thanks to all, Looks like I have a few more things to try out. I've successfully created a DVD, running the MCT on my work PC allowed me to create a .ISO, even though it refused to use the USB memory. Now just have to wait for my wife to finish her tax return so I can do a clean reboot.
I would have clean re-installed 8.1, but I got that as a downloaded upgrade, so I don't have the media.
    Stay tuned
    Cheers
