    Virus on WOW newsletter (Office97)

I'm not sure whether this is the right forum (if there's any on the Lounge) but has anyone had any virus detection problems with the latest WOW #7.01? I got the following from our secruity system:

<hr>MailMarshal (an automated content monitoring gateway) has stopped the following message:

    Message: B0001eb962.00000001.mml
    From: wow-robot@woodyswatch.com
    To: Keith.Rodgers@mca.govt.nz
Subject: Woody's Office Watch #7.01 - Your Office 'A' list

Because it believes an attachment to this message contains a virus. The virus scanning software used was: InoculateIT Ver 6.x Please clean the file and resend it.
    <hr>
I got a similar message with issue #.6.53. I tried going to the Web site and remailing the issues from the Archives but our secruity system threw up its arms again.

    Any ideas?
    Cheers

My newsletter (not sure which one - probably Office Watch) was blocked by my office as well. Our postmaster has recently been blocking all of the Woody newsletters which arrive in HTML format . Can't give you the exact message or newsletter number right now since I can't access my office e-mail at this time but will repost tomorrow and let you know details.

My office bans all Woodys stuff in html, too. I get WOW by subscribing to the plain text version, but I can only get the others at home.

D'you think there's any chance of either all newsletters being available in plain text, or whatever it is about the html versions that upsets our software being changed? Not that it really bothers me - it just makes life easier.

Re: Virus on WOW newsletter (Office97)

Hmm - interesting - when I joined WOW, there was a screen that listed all the newsletters and had checkboxes to choose which ones you wanted to join and for some of them choices as to whether you wanted html or plain text, and I'm sure that WOW was one of them, but there certainly isn't any such screen or choice there now (that I can find)!

    So - No, there doesn't appear to be another version now! <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Re: Virus on WOW newsletter (Office97)

Me too. I can't receive any of the html versions and I now have these sent to home, where I zip them and send them back to myself at work. Tedious! (I tried to change to the plain text versions of WAW and WPW, but they still failed to arrive). I also tried requesting the archive versions, but the html attachments are removed. Could Woody's team offer us an option of choosing zipped archives? Perhaps the newsletters could be supplied zipped too? There's been no sign of plain text WOW since the New Year, so I'm hoping nothing has changed...can't do without it!

You might want to check your subscription, then, because the latest WOW came to me yesterday!

I agree with your comments, though - I hadn't thought of zipping the emails and sending them to myself; I might try that one!

    I must admit I would prefer to have plain text versions of all of them ... <img src=/S/sigh.gif border=0 alt=sigh width=15 height=15>

Some shops are blocking HTML format emails entirely because HTML can contain active scripts (read viruses) and rather than scanning everything, they take the more draconian measure of blocking it all.

NAV 2001, with 29 Dec 2001 virus defintions, did not find any problems.

I get the plain text version.

Looking at the message and it's headers, I see no virus code. However, if your mail software is trying to access links within the message, maybe there's a virus at a link?

Re: Virus on WOW newsletter (Office97)

I've had a bit of an explore of the subscription section of Woody's site. If you click on the Subscribe button you can subscribe to a newsletter but there is no choice on whether there is HTML versions or not.

However if you click on the Services button you can pick HTML or plain text versions. While the Windows, Project & Access newsletters have this choice, WOW apperas to come only in plain text.

I have subscribed to one of their HTML newsletters to see if it hits our firewall.

Re: Virus on WOW newsletter (Office97)

Following is a portion of the msg from our MailSweeper:
<hr>A message from the following sender has been blocked from delivery:
    Source: bounce-wow-11586950@lists.woodyswatch.com
    Destination: pmcg@blank.ca

Subject: Woody's Office Watch #7.01 - Your Office 'A' list
    Reason: High Risk Attachments

The MailSweeper system has detected a high-risk element within this message that may indicate the presence of an e-mail based virus. In order to
minimize any potential service disruption to the Firm, this message has been quarantined pending administrator review.<hr>
When they first starting blocking Woody's newsletters I wrote to our postmaster to let him know that several of us received these newsletters on a regular basis. He informed me "All of the Woody newsletters are considered suspect". Sheesh.

As mentioned by Beryl & Kiwi Keith - I also tried to subscribe in plain text but there is no option now - m/be there was at one time? I'm going to unsubcribe at office and change to subscription at home - much easier than fighting the mailsweeper. BTW we use Corporate Version of Norton.

Re: Virus on WOW newsletter (Office97)

Only the links, rest was plain text.

I've seen Norton Auntie Virus give false positives on Woody's stuff before.
