    Windows Secrets' ultimate security-tools list

    TOP STORY

    Windows Secrets' ultimate security-tools list

    By Tracey Capen

One of our most popular columns is our semi-regular ultimate utilities list, which includes some security tools. But the collection of security-specific apps and services is huge. So we've created our first-ever ultimate security-tools list for your reference.

The full text of this column is posted at WindowsSecrets.com/top-story/windows-secrets-ultimate-security-tools-list/ (opens in a new window/tab).

Columnists typically cannot reply to comments here, but do incorporate the best tips into future columns.

I've had great success with Process Lasso. Free or paid.

    InSSIDer Not Free
Following the link in the listing in the article, I find that InSSIDer by MetaGeek is NOT Free, and hasn't been free in quite some time. For this reason, I have switched to using Acrylic WiFi Free when in Windows. ( Info : https://www.acrylicwifi.com/en/wlan-...lic-wifi-free/ ) When in Linux, I use the almost-similar to InSSIder LinSSID ( Download for Linux -- .DEB Package -- : http://sourceforge.net/projects/lins...oad?source=dlp )

    Other Useful Related Software:
For lost License Keys, including BIOS embedded Windows Keys, Nir Sofer (NirSoft) has ProduKey. (Info : http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html ) Note that recent versions of Microsoft Office no longer give up their Keys to this utility.

Which was mentioned the last time this got churned out six weeks ago, but the editors ignored it:

And you mentioned it when they churned it out 13 months ago too, but they ignored it then as well:

So they will probably just ignore it again.

    Secunia PSI 3 can not handle a company-type firewall/proxy

That is why I instead used "FileHippo App Manager" at work, but uses "Secunia PSI" at home.
"FileHippo App Manager" is free, and can be found (version 1.47 - latest stable version) at http://filehippo.com/download_app_manager/59899/

VeraCrypt was mentioned for full disk encryption. It only supports MBR. Do you have a recommendation for GUID? Current system doesn't have Bitlocker. Thanks!

No antivirus listed in security tools?

I loved the article on security tools, but why were no antivirus programs listed? I only see on-demand scanners.

I like Panda AV, works quietly and has picked up the odd slightly dodgy program.

    cheers, Paul

Thanks Paul. It so happens that I have Panda as well. I also have Malwarebytes Premium installed. I asked Panda support if there were any issues with this configuration, and they simply replied that no other similar program should be installed. Do you have an opinion?

    thanks, Jim

I don't run any other real time scanners, so I agree with Panda.
You don't need a real time malware scanner if you don't "install everything" or visit Pr0n sites. Regular scans after installing software and Windows updates up to date is all you should ever need (famous last words).

    cheers, Paul

Pr0n sites are much less likely to carry malware exploits than we are often led to believe, it's a huge industry that wouldn't put up with that from popular sites, to which they frequently release promo material - which would rapidly dry up should large numbers of users start to become infected.

Adobe products, adverts on mainstream news channels and the like plus email exploits are all more likely to infect.
