Ready or not, here comes Windows 10

    By Susan Bradley

This week, Microsoft began a more aggressive approach to moving Win7 and Win8.1 consumers to Windows 10. The upgrade is now flagged as a recommended update.

Here's what to expect, how to ensure the upgrade goes well, and options for customizing the experience.

I am currently running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit.
Will the recommended update first check if the PC hardware and drivers are good enough for an update to Windows 10? Is there no such thing as an "upgrade advisor" utility that can be run prior to upgrading to Windows 10 and that can point out the weak spots of the PC? (Old hardware or drivers, in particular...)

The upgrade advisor is built-in and you will not be offered the upgrade if your machine is not compatible.
If you want to upgrade manually:
    1. Make an image backup to an external disk using a 3rd party backup utility, like Aomei Backupper.
    2. Make a recovery / boot USB stick for the backup program.
    3. Install the Microsoft Media Creation Tool, download W10 and burn to another USB stick.
    4. From within your current Windows, run the W10 setup.exe from the USB stick.

If it all goes pear shaped you can revert to the image you created.

    cheers, Paul

I only get Important Windows updates. I stopped the recommended ones a while back because they are mostly just rubbish.
