    Win7 display windows freezing

My win7 system partially hangs after a couple of minutes. The mouse works but windows aren't updated and the taskbar and start button are inactive. Eventually the entire desktop goes dark with just the mouse cursor showing (and movable). By using the Resource Manager before the window lock up I could see that DWM.EXE had stopped responding. That makes sense since the Desktop Windows Manager is certainly involved, but I've started the system without the Desktop Mgmt Service and the system still freezes after a while. The system works okay in SAFE MODE. The system is normally very stable, nothing is over-clocked.
    Unsuccessful attempts I've made:

    • Restored entire partition from a week before problem started
    • Ran virus check (nothing found)
    • Updated display drivers
    • Switched to standard non-aero windows theme
    • Switched from (ASUS GTX-970 output via DisplayPort to Dell) to (embedded Intel graphics output via DVI to Samsung 213T monitor) - also switched setup in UEFI bios
    • Switched from single to dual monitor setup and back (same problem in either mode)
    • Killed all startup apps (not background apps)

    My system specs:
No code has to be inserted here.

Fire up Task Manager and watch the CPU usage. If CPU is the issue get Process Explorer and use it to find the culprit.

    cheers, Paul

So it is something that loads with Windows (other than the basic stuff needed to run Windows) and it is not in your startups. Not pretty. I'm with Paul. I'd run Process Explorer and see what is running after normal boot (all startups disabled) versus Safe Mode boot. Look at the non-MS stuff (sort column in PE).

In the end I think you are looking at backing everything up and then running sfc /scannow, and if that fails to fix the issue then a repair install of Win7.

You could go into msconfig and check the box for OS boot information under the Boot tab and then you will see everything loading as it boots up.

It may help to pinpoint the cause if it seems to stick on something.
