Link Excel cell(s) to Word without Excel formatting

I'm pulling my hair out. YIKES.
I want to link cells from Excel into various spots in a Word document. However, I don't want the formatting that appears in Excel to travel with the link.
It's a link, because if the Excel file changes, I want F9 to update the Word doc...again, want to preserve the Word doc formatting and not have the Excel formatting (which is different from the Word doc) travel to word.

I think I've tried every combination and cannot get this to work. Obviously, there's ONE MORE COMBO I haven't tried! What is it?

    KW,

    This technique works for me.
    1. Right Click and copy the cell in Excel
    2. Select the position in Word where the paste will end up
    3. In the Word document on the Home tab, click the arrow under paste and select paste special.
    4. In the Paste Special dialog box, click the "Paste link" option button then "unformatted text" followed by OK

The text will be pasted and the Excel formatting should be lost.

    HTH,
    Maud

Groan...you're right (of course). I kept using Excel Worksheet Object which, to me, seemed logical. Getting too old for this, I guess.
