Free diagnostic tools solve weird boot problems

    By Fred Langa

A reader's PC is experiencing weird and noisy boot-time problems. But there are no error messages or any other clues to what's causing the ruckus. This special, single-topic column shows how built-in, online, and third-party Windows diagnostic tools (most free) can get to the bottom of just about any problems with a PC.

The full text of this column is posted at windowssecrets.com/langalist-plus/free-diagnostic-tools-solve-weird-boot-problems/ (paid content, opens in a new window/tab).

Columnists typically cannot reply to comments here, but do incorporate the best tips into future columns.

I always find Fred's column interesting, but now it's raising questions in my mind. How current is Hiren's Boot CD? If it's not current, are there other alternatives?

The article did not say that the PC was failing to start up.
