When will Windows XP SP1 be launched?

Does anyone "know" (or has anyone heard any rumours of) when the first Service Pack for Windows XP is planned to be released? Our IT-department doesn't want to deploy WinXP in our firm before the SP is here.

it's expected to go into beta testing within the next couple of months or so, i'd look for it maybe in June but possibly as late as oct.

God only knows... SP3 for Windows 2000 is in beta since August, and now Microsoft KB lists 565 post-SP2 hotfixes...

If I'm not mistaken, the folks testing service packs are also bound by non-disclosure agreements so any news would either be a rumor or supposition.....correct?

doesn't stop paul thurrot from getting information and printing it in his news letters... <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

BTW - it is not in beta yet, but last word was sometime after christmas. Based on past experience, i expect it to be released in beta in Feb or March and public release in June. That's just based on how things have worked with both office and previous OS SPs. the june release date could easily be pushed back3 months, allowing it to be beta'd for 6 months.

i expect paul, woody and chris (lockergnome) will all mention it in their newsletters when it is released to outside testers. MS might even tell them.. rather than waiting for beta testers to leak the news.

    Are they that leery of Microsoft products? <img src=/S/flee.gif border=0 alt=flee width=25 height=25>

Actually, XP is extremely stable right out of the box. Your IT department would get the same benefits from Windows 2000, which is mature, as they would from XP. That is unless they like the overly blue interface and need some feature that XP provides.

    Food for thought.

Re: When will Windows XP SP1 be launched?

Most of my problems to date have been with delayed or deficient 3rd party drivers. The other big problem is the "hidden cost" of upgrading to XP. Most software in the device (eg. Roxio) or utility (eg. Norton Utilities) will not work without upgrading to XP versions.

XP has been very stable on new pre-configured and tested systems from major vendors.
