Bullet and Numbered lists (W97 SR2)

Can someone tell me where default settings for tabs and hanging indents in bullet and numbered lists are hidden in W97? I am using a report template based on the supplemental Word 6 Landscape Report template (replan.dot) and get tabs inserted and hanging indents changed when I use 'Bullets and Numbering' to change whether numbered lists restart or continue numbering from a previous list..

Also, is there a way to set the list styles to restart numbering every time by default?

Those, my friend, are the notorious "Jason tabs" - everyone who's tried to work with Word numbering has likely run into these - for more info do a search in this forum for "Jason tabs" - no doubt you'll find lots to read.

The very first thing to ask though is: are you linking the bullet and numbered lists to styles, or are you just using the Numbering button on the Formatting toolbar to apply numbering to paragraphs? If you are doing the latter, your efforts are doomed to failure. Bullet and numbering formatting must be linked to styles, if you are to have any hope of success at all. Word numbering is a terrible trap for the uninitiated or unwary!

Thanks Gary

Yes, I am using styles and the problem occurs when I go to Format Bullets and Numbering to restart numbering.

If I could set my styles to restart numbering as the default, I would not have the problem as often.

In the mean time, I will carry out the search that you suggest.

Thanks again, Geoff

A simple macro will allow you to restart the numbering whenever you like.
It looks like this

Sub ListRestart()
' Resets numbering of current list to restart numbering
Dim aList As Variant
Set aList = Selection.Range.ListFormat
aList.ApplyListTemplate ListTemplate:=aList.ListTemplate, _
ContinuePreviousList:=False
End Sub

Removing the restart is as simple as Ctrl-Q

This avoids having to visit the dialog box assuming you have your styles already set up.
