Attaching USB device to WinXP in Windows Virtual PC on Win7

I'm running a virtual WinXP machine in Windows Virtual PC on Win 7 SP1.

I'm trying to attach a USB optical drive, but the attach process always fails. After many fails, I tried to attach first a USB flash drive and then a USB hard drive. In each case, the virtual machine correctly recognizes the type of device plugged in to the USB port, but again refuses to attach any of them.

The error message I get is (in a nice box):
    -------
Windows XP Mode - Windows Virtual PC

    X

Could not attach the USB device. You can attach [sic] the USB device
to a different port or restart the virtual machine and try again

    OK
    -------

Neither suggested solution has ever been successful.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? TIA

I don't use Windows VPC but in VMware you need to give the virtual machine exclusive access to the USB device.

    cheers, Paul

OK Paul, but how exactly does one "...give the virtual machine exclusive access to the USB device."?

    TIA

It's an option when the VM launches in VMware. Don't know how to do it in Windows VPC.

    cheers, Paul
