    Win8.1 PRO updates

    Good Morning,

I have not updated the Win8.1 PRO 64bits on the laptop of my wife for the last 6/7 months, or more.

Now, lately I'm trying to do this, but the ONLY option offered to me is to update it to Win10, an OS that I know my wife will not adapt to.

I already have my laptop using Win10.

    - Is Microsoft not updating Win8.1 PRO 64bits anymore, forcing people to migrate to Win10?

I wish I could get help from you people on this matter, so I can update my wife's 8.1 system, where she feels happy.

    Regards,
    Flores

    Hello, amflores.
I had that situation yesterday. A client left a computer with me which needed attention. It kept offering the Windows 10 upgrade but I downloaded and ran GWX Control Panel. That silenced the nag about 10.
I rebooted the computer. Afterward, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there actually were Winodows 8.1 updates offered.
Hope that works for you, too.

    Good day.

When you get the main nag for Win 10, sometimes in small blue lettering underneath is a link to view all updates, which can be missed,

Not sure if these commands run from a Command Prompt (Admin) will help, but you can give them a go.

    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

This one can appear to hang on 20% but will complete.

Follow that with a sfc /scannow to see if any corruption remains.

The free version of the Windows Repair program at www.tweaking.com may help.

Run Option 2 to see if there are any missing/corrupt Package cat or mum files as they can affect updates and if they come up clean along with the Reparse Points and Environment Variables, then go onto the main repairs after using the registry back up facility.

    Hi RockE,

I'm having problems with my system.
Unfortunately GWX Control Panel simply doesn't install on my system after several trials.
    I will keep trying.
    Thanks for your help.
    Cheers,

Try installing GWX in Safe Mode with Networking as your AV program could be blocking, but should it be because of a registry problem, run this MS Fixit for installing problems.

Have you tried those cmds or others I've suggested ?

    Hello Sudo15,

    Thanks for your help.

I did follow your instructions, and installed GWX OK.
What GWX buttons to press, as it did not remove the automatic Win10 update.
When I tried updating my 8.1 system, the only update available was Win10.

    I must have missed something.

I did not try those commands yet. I"m not an expert (far from it) and I confess I'm afraid of tweaking withWindows.

If the Win 10 update is "emblazoned" where you would normally see which updates there were, look to the left just under the box to see if there is a small blue link to see the other updates.

Those commands run themselves, but as you have gotten the Win 10 update, then something is on the move.

You can click on the Win 10 one which should take you to the window where you can right click on it and select Hide.

In GWX Control Panel you would click the box to prevent Win 10 upgrades and the one to monitor.

I believe Sudo15 is right when he says something is on the move.

Can you post a screenshot on what the only Windows 10 option is?

I haven’t seen the issue you mention but since you don’t want Windows 10, I would consider the following

    Go into Windows Update settings
It’s probably set to Install Updates automatically (Recommended)
--- If it is change it: I have mine set to Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them on the computer I do not want Windows 10

Go into Optional updates and see if anything is checked in to install Windows 10
--- If there is uncheck it.

    Uninstall KB3035583 & KB2976978
    Using command prompt (Admin)
    wusa /uninstall /kb:3035583 /norestart
    wusa /uninstall /kb:2976978 /norestart
    After that, restart the computer

Maybe then you will then be able to download and use GWX
