multiple conditional formating conditions for one cell

I want to make S3 show red if J3 is listed as "closed" but once data is put into S3, I want it to lose the red color - I have it working that S3 will go red when J3 has "closed" in it, but after I put in the date into S3 the red color doesn't leave... I cant figure it out :-(
    any help would be appreciated!

    Trish,

Here's a set of rules that will do what you want including clearing the highlight if the cell is cleared and catching any combination of cases in the word closed , e.g. Closed, closed, CLOSED, cLoSeD, etc.
Note: the order matters as do the Stop If True selections!

    Rule Formulas:

    =ISNUMBER(S3)
    =UPPER(S3)="CLOSED"
    =S3=""

    Hi Trish,

If RG's solution does not work for you, you can try these settings. I don't believe it is case sensitive

Looks to me like you only need one condition:
    =AND($J$3="Closed",$S$3="")
    to format it red.
