Firefox suddenly showing three tabs on startup and acting crazy.

This happened overnight. I'm running Firefox 47.0 under windows 7. The last Firefox update was two weeks ago. My home page has been set to www.google.com for years.

Today when I started Firefox it opened three tabs, https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/47.0/firstrun/, https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo...run/learnmore/, and a firefox search page with no visible url.

The first page insists that I set up a firefox account. When I set up the account it insists that I sync all my devices. When I tell it I don't have devices I want to sync it insists that I sync some anyway. When I shut down Firefox and restart the same thing happens again.

I tried selecting tools>options and it won't let me type in a new home page or let me click on use current page. The profile directory is shown as c:\users\me\appdata\roaming\Mozilla\firefox\profil es\17wirvk9.default\

In this directory there are a total of 245 files with the form "prefs-nn.js". Prefs-1 through prefs-20 all are dated 7/25/13. Prefs-21 through prefs-41 are dated 6/12/16. Prefs-42 through prefs-48 are dated 6/13/16. Prefs-49 through prefs-60 are date 6/14/16. Prefs-61 through prefs-244 are all dated 6/15/16 which is today. All of these files have the length of zero bytes!

    There are also files named prefs.js 15043 6/12/16, prefs.js.bak 15439 7/27/13, prefs.js.copy 14302 6/8/16, prefs.js.lpbak 27579 9/10/14, and prefs.js.new 15439 7/27/13.

    I think Firefox went nuts.

When I've seen 2 or more tabs open when first starting Firefox I close all but one, go to the page/site I want to set as Default Home page, bookmark it [now using www.duckduckgo.com] then go to Options/Preferences and in the General section choose Use bookmark... to select the one I want, not the Use Current pages so I get no others set as the home page. If you want put aboutreferences in the address bar. Don't know why that icon shows but it's covering the : [colon] and p.
