    PowerShell Profile Hierarchy

In listing the hierarchy or profiles, MS TechNet says the following:

    1) %windir%\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\profile.p s1

This profile applies to all users and all shells.

    2) %windir%\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\ Microsoft.PowerShell_profile.ps1

This profile applies to all users, but only to the Microsoft.PowerShell shell.

    3) %UserProfile%\My Documents\WindowsPowerShell\profile.ps1

This profile applies only to the current user, but affects all shells.

    4) %UserProfile%\My Documents\WindowsPowerShell\Microsoft.PowerShell_p rofile.ps1

This profile applies only to the current user and the Microsoft.PowerShell shell.

I'm not clear on when it says "all shells" what it means. Do the scripts in that group operate upon the entire Windows environment, or still only in a PowerShell window? If the latter, what other kinds of shells are they talking about?

    Chuck,

All Shells means it will apply to both PowerShell and the Command Shell, e.g. CMD.exe or Command.exe. It might also apply to VBScript but I'm not sure about that as I don't use VBScript.
