    Windows 10 and Skype

I had Skype running on Win 7 and upgraded to Win 10. Still had my same Skype program because it copied all the programs over. It worked like before.

Did a clean install of Win 10 which means I lose my Skype program but I have the Skype Video app. Wow. What a huge difference between the two. I don't even log into it the way I used to. It uses my Win 10 Microsoft account without logging in. If I can't log in like I used to, I'll lose all my contacts. I don't want to have that happen.

Is there a way logout and login in?

If I download another Skype program from the internet, will it be the same as the one I had on Win 7 or the same as the new one on Win 10? I need the one where you login with a user id.

Go to Skype.com, click the download button, and the on the next window download the Windows desktop version.

Thanks Joe. That download version is the one I am used to and now I have all my contacts back.

I think Microsoft owns Skype so I am not sure why Microsoft has two different versions. I guess it wants Windows 10 to control it under the Microsoft Account. Maybe I can uninstall that version since I do not want to use it.

They are introducing a UWP (Universal Windows Program) version of Skype which will replace the desktop version for Win10.

There's a preview version of Skype available in the Windows store.

As long as the UWP version let's me keep my contacts and functions like the desktop download then that's good news. The built-in Windows 10 Skype video version did not. It locked me into my microsoft account and I could not get my previous contacts. That was a no go for me.

You can login with the old Skype account to Skype.com and associate your Microsoft account with it. Then you will have all contacts from each of the accounts.

I tried that Rui and it doesn't work as it says you have to login to the Skype app and as you do there's a page with a question along the lines of 'have you got another account'. Trouble is I've logged into Skype with my MS account and can't force Skype to logout in a way to enable me to login again with a password - it logs straight back in without any password request. All the help says all I have to do is login, but I just can't get to a point where it logs out properly. Any ideas?

Did you do that at www.skype.com?

Yes, when I went there, there was an entry for adding the MS account but it referred to doing the association as you login to the Skype app with your MS account. I'll look again in case there's something I missed, but all the links I found said that was the way to do it.
It's unfortunate that I set up the account with the MS account as I think that there was a window asking if there was another account. I wonder if I'll have to uninstall then reinstall the Skype app.

Hmmm... I can login with both accounts both at the site and on the desktop app, and also on my Windows phone. Whenever I logout, I get no automatic login, I am able to choose which account to use.

I can't reproduce your situation, sorry, so I fear I may not be of too much help.

OK, thanks Rui, I'll just have to look again and see if I've missed something.

Well I did miss something. I was using Skype Video, which seems to be a modern app. I download the desktop version, and now I can logout fully. Still can't get the two accounts associated but as I'm not using the MS one, I've closed that one and I'll just login with the original Skype one.

Late getting back to you but thanks. This did the trick. I didn't use the MS account as I wanted to keep them separate. Glad I got my other contacts back.
