windows update has stuffed my pc

A comment in passing. Tried to apply the latest optional update. PC hung for about an hour and a half at the "don't turn off your computer" stage. I figured it had had long enough and turned it off. Probably the wrong thing to do. But how long do you wait? (And I needed to hit the sack. Rennovating and the only room fore the PC is the bedroom.)

PC now will not fully load windows. using safemode have tried to go back a couple of restore points. No success.

Microsoft not a lot of help so far.

This is not the latest issue. PC has been running very slowly since Microsoft's last support sessions.

    Linux is looking attractive.

So the solution - from Microsoft - is to reload Windows.
What a complete waste of time. Which I don't have. So no PC for a fw weeks. Sigh!!

    What version of Windows?
Can you get to any recovery menu?
Do you have a recovery CD or USB?

    Thanks Team
Last Support was months ago. Office 365 update failed. Microsoft and I spent many many hours (60 70) getting the pc to run, inclding two Windows reinstalls. Ever since the PC has been slow.

    Win 7 ultimate

Went back 2 restore points but no success.
Can only get a desktop in safe mode.
Normal mode loads partially. Get the destop background but no icons. By using control Alt Delete can get to task manager.
Can run very few things from there. eg, explorer won't run.
    Can get no network access.
Yes I do have a recovery USB stick.

I am resigned to reinstalling Windows. But it may be a few days, unless I can get someone else to help, as I don't have te days of spare time required.

I guess I am just annoyed. With Microsoft for releasing buggy stuff. But also with myself. Was in a hurry and didn't check well enough. "make haste slowly"

You could try your restore points from the Recovery Environment after booting up with an install disk or see what Startup Repair reports if it can't auto repair.

In the Recovery Environment select Command Prompt then enter -

bcdedit |find "osdevice" and using whichever partition letter, enter (assuming c )

    sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows

to see if that will run and what it reports.

exit to close the cmd window, remove the install disk and Restart.
