PortableApps tour: Software offered in bulk

    By Nathan Segal

Most of the applications we use require some sort of installation process that firmly bonds them to one machine.

But that formal install isn't a Windows requirement. Portable applications, as their name implies, can run without being set up on a specific machine. They're sort of click and go from whatever drive they're residing on, including flash drives.

I just installed PortableApps.com on a USB drive for my Windows 7 computer.
It is a clever idea, although none of the portable utilities I currently have on that USB drive are on their list of 500 (which is largely games).

I was disappointed that ProtableApps.com did not start automatically when I insert the USB drive. I have to go to Windows Explorer and select their correct .exe file. The instructions implied that it would start automatically.
