Exclamation Connectivity/Privacy Issues in Metro/Universal Apps & Tiles

I had gone thru the time-consuming trouble of using the Power Shell to remove Metro apps the first time I saw them in Win8, as I do not want them for private/home use... Now having upgraded to Win10 the situation comes again but I do not have as much time to remove them again that way, so I really need to know what they entail as regards to privacy & security issues?

Normally at home, I only use a browser when I need to, I don't keep it open all the time as a background. And I connect to an external network/server purposely, when I have to login to use its services, and disconnect/logout from it when I am finished. But I cannot see how to get that control in Win10...?

...Are the Metro/Universal apps & live tiles just "animated icons", or do they really run whenever your PC is online?

I'd like to know the real parameters of the problem: when do these apps connect to the internet? What protocols do they use? any other than http/https? If you remove tiles from the tiles desktop, do they still work in the background?

How can we exert control over these apps at home, what are the ways that the user can deal with their inherent privacy and security issues? I just don't like to feel like my PC has a back door open and working runaway apps, whenever it's online....

The Win10 upgrade was a must for Win 8/.1 users, since they were already in the Metro apps system. I did it myself on a Win8.1 laptop and I'm thrilled with the upgrade, (though, I still want to control or remove the apps, and I hope to get clarification on them here, to choose what to keep and what to remove...)

The Win10 upgrade is a different upheaval in the case of a Win7 laptop...
In case the timeliness of my post was not clear, I'm posting a more focused question here:

Whether to Revert to Win7 or not? the 21-days question

Customizing Win10 on an old Win8 laptop will be a long process, but deciding about Win7 reversion is a bit critical, so I hope to get technical enlightenment on both posts, addressing their different scope. Thank you very much
