    Cannot remove 'Yahoo Powered' program

    Hi,

I have tried to remove a program 'Yahoo Powered' from my PC , it is spyware of sorts but it cannot seem to be removed. I have tried Malware Bytes and Ccleaner but none of them work.

I believe that's a search engine that's used by a few programs. Do a search for "yahoo powered" as a phrase.

I'm not sure it IS spyware. It may be part of a package installed by another program.

    Have you tried Geek uninstaller?
How do you know it's spyware?

I just had another look for "yahoo! powered" and can find no mention of it on any of the major anti-virus sites. That's an indication that it's not a virus or spyware.

Since it's showing up as an installed program but it won't uninstall, there's a chance it's already been removed but the entry in the programs list remains. When you click on the program in the list, does it tell you the name and location of the program in the status bar at the bottom of the window?

Have you used Regedit to search for "yahoo" to see if you can find the entry that give you the location of the files?

I've been using Any Video Converter on two machines for some years now, and I frequently update it. It does come with some crapware which I just have to untick in the installer (just like so much software these days).

Then, recently, on one machine something went wrong and the update didn't work. Having nothing else to do, I uninstalled AVC completely and downloaded it again. It was then that I noticed a new entry in the Start Menu: Yahoo! Powered. It seemed to be something to do with the Chromium browser (no, not Chrome) which had also appeared.

This never happened before or since (there's been one more update).

So, long story short: Yahoo! Powered had an entry in the program list, but it wouldn't uninstall, so I searched for any files or folders with Yahoo in the name. Only Program Files and Application Data had anything. I just deleted the lot. Then it was a search in the registry; again I deleted everything. Chromium uninstalled easily; it's now all gone.

I never did find out exactly what it was; I suspected a browser hijack but my normal browser (FF) hadn't changed; I also checked IE but nothing there either.

From what I could see online, Yahoo! powered is some kind of plug-in search engine. For example, I saw references to a weather program that was Yahoo! powered. There were also references to Yahoo! powered now being Bing!.

I've seen problems in the past where someone installed some free/shareware and ended up with a Yahoo or Ask toolbar in their browser. I believe Java or Flash still tries to install Ask by default.
