Post Cortana: The spy in Windows 10

A rather humorous article about the Cortana privacy issue. Like it or hate it, there are instructions for stopping cortana ( Pro and home ) included in the article.

When I first saw Mr. Spock talking to the Enterprise’s computer, I thought it was so cool. I still do. But the more I look at Cortana, Windows 10’s inherent virtual assistant, the more creeped out I get.

I think we're going to be OK in the UK. With Anniversary Update, Cortana no longer appears to support English (United Kingdom) so I assume it no longer monitors Brits.

Still no English (United Kingdom) as a choice though. It's like Windows Vista all over again... never finished.

Is this in build 14393.51 ?

I think prior to AU it used to say Cortana Ask me anything but now it just says Ask me anything, but when I click on it, it still seems to be Cortana as at the bottom its says Cortana can do much more with an arrow to expand.

    That's because it's already chosen!

If I change to English (United States) for example, the option to pick English (United Kingdom) becomes available.

Mine's just updated itself and now shows like yours, i.e. I can now see 'At the moment, Cortana is using English (United Kingdom).' which I couldn't see before.

Wow, MS sure are pushing the use of Microsoft Accounts. Most of the new options seem linked to 'other signed-in devices'.

I use Google Search for anything I want and as MS tracks your browsing then that will be enough spying for me without giving them more by using Cortana - but each to their own, but I won't be using it or Edge.

    +1

I preferred the 'old' Cortana in Release 1511. One single and simple registry setting turned off all the nonsense and left it as a local search engine. The 'new' version just makes me despair. "Taskbar titbits"? "Let Cortana pipe up from time to time with thoughts, greetings, and notifications in the Search box."? Give me a break! I'm an adult, not some child who needs to be constantly entertained with trivia.

And Google Search does not track anything, right? Hey! You are on the internet. Get used to being tracked!

I'm well aware everything tracks you on the 'net but have noticed that I no longer get any adverts in my gmail - so that is at least one down.

I've been using DuckDuckGo a lot more than Google lately. Not as intrusive.

I have never had any advertisements in gmail. I do use adblock, perhaps this is why. I don't know.
