Registry editing software

I have a dual boot Win 98/Win 2000 system, with each OS on a separate drive. I need to add another Win 2000 to a separate partition on one of the drives. Currently Win 98 is on C:, Win 2000 is on F: and G: is empty, waiting for the clone.

In effect, I want to duplicate my current Win 2000 partition, but change some apps, and maybe a few other things, in the added Win 2000 partition.

It is my understanding that I can copy the partition, then let Win 2000 install over the copied partition?

However, I would need registry editing software to change all F: to G: in the clone.

What software is available for editing the registry in this way?

I looked at regfind in the Win 2000 Pro Resource Kit, but it did not even find all occurrences of F: in the registry, or did I perhaps miss a switch that I need to use?

Howard:

What about using BootMagic from Partition Magic.

It allows you to hide partitions depending on boot option selected. This way your 2K OS will always be running from F:

Re: Registry editing software

I am seeking Registry Editing software.

I will only use the built-in MSFT supplied multiple boot mechanisms.

I have found Registry Detective and RegSAfeFree at the PC Mag web site. The latter may do that which I seeketh to do, not sure about the former.

I've ordered the O'Reiley book Windows 2000 Quick Fixes 'cause I believe that it addresses these issues.

Hi Howard
Important as it is, the part of the Registry you're interested in is a simple (!) text file. What is wrong with the app built into every Windows OS - regedit.exe ?

Like the last one, I could be missing the significance of your question. If so, sorry.

Take a look at Registry Crawler. It may be what you want. I used to use it quite a bit on an NT system, and it wil do a search and replace.

Re: Registry editing software

I took a look at Registry Crawler.

Although it does do a search, it does not appear to allow a global search. Instead, if you indicate that you wish to edit something, it appears to plop you into Regedit, so you can change only 1 value at a time.

Re: Registry editing software

Are there any FREE registry editors that allow a global search and replace within the Registry for all types of data values?

Are there any non-Free registry editors that do this?

It appears that Norton Utilities does not support registry editing for Win 2000.

Registry Toolkit appears to do the deed, but registration only provides 6-months of updates.

Re: Registry editing software

Thanx for the pointer.

I downloaded the files, but I do not see mention of search and replace capabilities in the Help file.

I haven't looked at it lately, and its features may have changed in more recent OS versions.

Re: Registry editing software

The registry for NT, 2000, and XP is quite different than the registry in 9x, so Registry Crawler likely implemented different options.

I expect that this is why Norton Utilities does not support registry editing for other than the 9x OSs.

Actually, the version I had was for NT, but it was at least 5 years ago.
