If that doesn't help, there's more here: Solve Windows Update problem (High CPU & memory usage)

    Joe,

That worked the trick! I've been trying stuff, restoring images, etc, etc, for 3 days now. 20 minutes with that fix then another half hour to get all the updates that came through downloaded and installed and I'm golden for my trip! Thank you so much!

The info @ tweaking.com implies that the Convenience rollup update (KB3125574) is needed to cure the Windows Update problem; it isn't. I've recently rebuilt a Win 7 system from scratch and did not need that update to cure the Windows Update problem (though I did install it after the other updates had been installed). Furthermore, the KB3125574 update won't install if the updates included in KB3020369 have not been installed beforehand. In my case, I didn't need to install the KB3020369 update package because everything in it had already been installed by Windows Update before installing the KB3125574 update.

The tweaking.com page also includes the Dalai/krelay fix, what works for one person doesn't always work for others, that's part of why this WU issue has been dragging on for over a year now.

Having had the opportunity to try out the fix from the OP yesterday, it looks like it hands over the Windows Update procedure to Trustedinstaller (the old 25% CPU usage by the WU SVCHost is taken by Tristedinstaller now). Not sure what else this does, or if it will change user choices WU in respect of the upcoming 'all or nothing' changes by MS but for now, it works as fast as the krelay/Dalai fix did for me previously.

The latest (or should that be one of the latest) 'magic' KB is KB3185911. On my main rig earlier I tried WU, after ~30 minutes I got bored and installed "MS16-106: Security update for Microsoft Graphics Component: September 13, 2016", aka KB3185911. Post reboot, I ran WU and within 2m:35 uptime, it had the current WUs displayed.

    Hat-tip to Woody.
