Picture formatting vanishes in a Word document

I am using Word 2007 and am having a problem with some images.

I use "Insert Picture" to load in an image from my PC. Normally, when you right click on the image, you get the "Picture Tools" menu which allows you you to change the size, location, text wrapping etc. However, this is not happening with some of the images in the document. They appear to freeze, so they can no longer be adjusted. The only way to remove them is to mark from above to below the image, and then use backspace to delete.

    Any help welcome.
    Thanks

The few times I've had to do it I inserted a Text Box then put the image in that.
