Do you want users to be able to access files on the server from the internet? I assume you do.

Internet access to any internal files is a dangerous thing without a lot of protection. The best methods have dedicated VPN servers with 2 factor authentication.
You can do it without a dedicated VPN server by using an existing file server, but it is less secure.
You should always use a VPN connection to secure the data.
You must make users change their passwords regularly to reduce the chance of someone sneaking in.
Limit the connection attempts to 2 or 3 per 24 hours.
Be prepared for DDOS attacks on the internet facing server.
Keep the internet facing server updated with Windows security patches.
Backup often and test the backup regularly.

    cheers, Paul

To get the security that Paul is describing, I think it would be good to look into a file sharing service, rather than setting it up yourself, because the file sharing service will take care of the security aspects.

Here is some information about some file sharing services:

That's effectively a dedicated VPN, but I like the set up and forget arrangement. Much simpler than roll your own and therefore likely to be more secure for those not used to setting up a VPN.

The creation of a VPN is not a trivial task. Read this walk through and ask if you have more questions.
