Merge to a text box (Word 2000)

I've been handed a label - merge problem. The label is laid out with some free-form text, a table and a text box with merge fields in each. The fields in the text box are sometimes being dropped. I can avoid the problem by setting the whole thing in a table, but I'd like to understand the cause of the problem. Any thoughts?

Text boxes are hybrid animals and finicky. Using a copy of your merge document, try converting the text boxes to frames and see if that improves the situation.

Try checking that the anchor for the text box is actually within the area merged in the label - if not, the box might get left behind?
