    Remove ERROR reference (WORD 97/2000)

Is it possible to remove error messages generated by WORD such as

    a. Error! Bookmark not defined.
    b. Error! No table of figures entries found.
    c. Error! No table of figures entries found.

from the document (perhaps by using a macro) or set up WORD so that those message are not displayed in the document (just sent to ether or something)? Surely, it must be possible.
    Thanks.

You may want to ask why those codes in the document to begin with and why are they not defined.

If you don't want a table of figures, just delete the code that creates it... press ALT+F9 then delete the code in brackets {} (everything, including the brackets).
For bookmarks, choose Insert>Bookmarks and delete the ones you see that you don't need. If they were inserted by way of Cross Reference you may have to check the Hidden Bookmarks check box to see them all.

Again, before you do all this, I would caution you to figure out WHY these were put in the document in the first place.

Raj, KT is absolutely correct: you should make sure that the codes belong in the current document. However, if the answer is yes and the message is caused by a field code, then you can fix it by wrapping the field code in an IF. See <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=wrd&Number=106688&page= &view=&sb=&o=&vc=1#Post106688>this</A> post for an example. HTH --Sam

Sam and KT, You are both life savers. Thanks very much for your suggestions. I should have thought of the IF statement myself. I shall look into it bit more.

The Codes (for list of tables/figures) are required by the 'people upstairs' as part of the template so that the users only have define tables/figures in the document. The TOC etc gets updated automatically but if there are no tables/figures TOC is left blank (apart from normal contents).
    Thanks.

I suffer from the same problem in a large document that is a Master with many Sub documents.

If I insert cross references between Sub documents and then open one of the sub-documents outside of the master then the cross reference appears as "Error! Reference not found". The most annoying aspect of this is that Word BOLDS the error message, presumably to make sure that you see it. Next time you open the Master document you get the correct cross reference - bit it now has bold character formatting.

I know the answer - stop using Master documents - unfortunately it is too late for this one, so I guess I am going to have to work out how to nest the insert cross reference in an IF field!

I've been through the horror of Master Documents.... my warning to you now is stop while you still have the information in the document!! Get them into their own documents... There's a saying passed around here about Master Docs... I forget who said it (Chas?) "It's not a matter of if the master document will corrupt... it's when."

    Hi KT:

It was John McGhie, MVP, and he said: "A master document has only two possible states: Corrupt, or just about to be corrupt. And that is why we say that the only possible fix to a master document is

    No, those are REAL errors.
You can remove each one by removing/hiding the field producing the error, but you really should correct the errors.
