    defragmentation

    My OS is Windows98SE.
My defragmentation program stalls at 57% complete. After 10% completion the following message is flashed: "driver contents changed". The program then starts over again and stalls at 57-59%. I haven't changed anything in respect of my driver. The only things I have changed since my last defrag is to download Internet Explorer 6 and various Microsoft critical updates and to remove AOL 7 (which wiped out some IE6 connections) and reinstall AOL 5. Does anyone have any ideas why the defrag stalls and how to correct it?

Otherwise, I do not have operating system problems.

    Thanks

    Sylvia

Do you have a screensaver or virus checker running while trying to defrag? I've found I need to disable both of these if I want to defrag.

Also, run a full scandisk before you defrag, just in case.

I am debugging the same problem and found that I had ZoneAlarm posting alerts. Turing the posting off fixed one machine. I used PCMAG's DiskAction tool to report on what is writing to the disk.

Another machine has the same problem even in Safe Mode. Am still working on it.

    Hi
You've something running in the background. Use MSCONFIG.exe to find out what it is and disable it temporarily.
If no joy, do your defragging in Safe Mode.
