Cant register OE as mail client

Using Win/XP Home Edition, I can't register OE as mail client. I can bring it up from OE on start menu, but it says it is not the mail client. Click YES make it default, but next execution same window. Can I take the Software/Clients/Mail registry settings from a working machine and register with broke machine? What else can I try.

Please, be more specific. When you open Internet Options (from Control Panel or from Internet Explorer Tools menu) and click Programs tab, is OE on the drop-down E-mail list ? If it's not, try to reinstall Internet Explorer (Control Panel | Add and Remove Programs | Add and Remove Windows Components | Internet Explorer).

Re: Cant register OE as mail client

Sorry. You are correct, Outlook Express is NOT on the drop down (from CP or IE Tools menu). Fire up OE6 and it says not the default client. Make it default (YES). but it never happens. I've looked at the registry and do not see the key /.../Clients/Mail as I do on other machines. I'll give the reinstall IE a try. What about OE reinstall from Windows Components? I guess I'm confused if the problem is IE, OE, or XP?

Re: Cant register OE as mail client

Don't know how you feel about checking the registry, but it might behoove you to check the following keys....any MAPI mail client you have installed should be listed as a subkey underneath the first entry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClientsMail
Data (string): (Default) "Microsoft Outlook"

Outlook Express should have the following entry underneath this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClientsMailOutlook Express
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClientsMailOutlook ExpressEnvelope
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClientsMailOutlook ExpressProtocols
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClientsMailOutlook Expressshell

If that entry does not exist, I would suggest re-installing Outlook Express. The files exist on your system since you can run it, but are not registered with XP as a mail client. As for that last question (IE, OE or XP), can we just say "Microsoft" and leave it at that? It would be hard to say which particular component is at fault, so instead of that let's work for a solution instead!

The registry settings DO NOT exist. One does exist with a lower 'm' ....SoftwareClients[m]ail but the others do. As for reinstall OE, I did not see that option on the Windows components. Can I assume it is part of I-Explorer? I can't find it anywhere as a Windows Component.

Re: Cant register OE as mail client

Ouch. Not there. That explains the "why' part, at least partially. There is no OE option in Windows components since it's really Internet Explorer with some interface tweaks. Heck, that's just about what Windows is these days anyway. At any rate....

I don't know how to re-install it under XP, since it is bundled from the get-go. I can suggest two things to try....one may not work, and the other is a daring registry file merge copped straight off of my working XP Pro installation.

Try running Internet Explorer setup, downloading the small installer from http://www.microsoft.com/ie. I imagine this will tell you that it's a Windows 2000/XP installation and not provide any options.

Or, try downloading the attached REG file, which was exported from my XP installation. Do a system restore or better yet a backup first just in case. See if merging the file allows you to select it from the drop down list in Internet Options.

Thanks Mark. The best way to merge is an import from Regedit? or should I use regsvr32? The attached does not look like a plain txt file.

Re: Cant register OE as mail client

Once you've unzipped it, all you should have to do is to double-click on it and you will be asked if you want to merge it into the registry. Click OK and it's done.

I didn't think to add before that I have looked at that key on NT 4, 98SE, 2000 and XP, and the contents are identical (I don't use OE for anything but newsgroups) - but be cautious, just the same.

Re: Cant register OE as mail client

Although my WinXP Home Edition was pre-loaded on my new machine, I probably don't have the same situation as you. MY IE/OE works fine. I recall in IE/Internet Options/Programs that you can select for IE to be the default browser. You should verify that that is checked also, then maybe OE will play fair with you.
