Slow display of messages! (6.00)

Something on my Windows 2000 machine seems to have changed recently that caused this behaviour: whenever I start Outlook Express, the message header listing and the preview pane take forever to display (up to 30 seconds compared the original 2 seconds). I thought it was because I had moved my mail folder to a secondary hard drive that was going into sleep mode, but that was not the case. I also found something on MS's website about imagehlp.dll (or something like that) being an incorrect version. I messed around with the two versions I had available and that did not have any effect.

Any ideas? Outlook Express is the only program that exhibits this strange and rather annoying behaviour.

What anti virus software are you running?

Thanks for the input Leif. I tried the first idea of turning off the compacting in the background and it made no difference. The second KB article discusses another issue that only pertains to 95 or 98, not Windows 2000. So, I am still left with a slow starting Outlook Express 6.0 for now.

I am running Norton Antivirus 2001. I am sure it did not have any effect on Outlook Express starting up when it was first installed. Who knows what it may be doing now. I will look into it's effect.

It may be trying to connect to you email box on the server and is taking longer to connect?
