Necessary Patch Files

With Microsoft announcing that they will soon be ending technical support for Win 98, we (where I work) have discussed trying to collect all the various patches that have been issued so we could manually apply them when creating (or recreating) a system (as opposed to using the Windows Update feature to automatically scan and update a system).

Has anyone seen or created a list of "patches that should be applied?" Any opinions on what should and should not be included?

I have the same concerns about Office 97 (yes, we still use this beast since it does meet all our needs -- and we're too cheap to upgrade) so I'll be posting this type of message in that message board as well.

    Thanks!

    Re: Necessary Patch Files

Unfortunately for your plan, MS often make it impossible. Their update files do not always give you the choice of first saving anything to disk - they download, then immediately install. That is, unless I'm missing something. I'd dearly like to be able to do what you describe (and you can for some patches - I have a few in a folder : q312461, q313675, q315000....) but the big ones don't seem to be capturable in this way.

    MerC,
Something to look for in update and patch pages at MS is a link to any Network / Administrator guides. Although they may appear irrelevant, they can lead to downloads for distribution across a LAN.

Edited by DaveA on 17-Jan-02 12:55.
Note that the MS web page I posted up above is ALL down load ONLY so the Corporate's can load on their servers for updating. You might want to start using this site in leu of the main Windows update.

    Changed "loan" to "load"

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
