    SQL & Exchange server (2000 Dev./SR1)

Hi, I need some help about the SQL 7.0 & Exchange2000 server. I have O2K Developer & Win98. I have intalled Premium, Developer, MSDN Library & MS Visual SourceSafe. Do I need to install the other 2 disks or could I install them later ? If I did'nt install them would it mess up my registration when I did register ? My manuals don't say much about these 2 disks like which to install first or how. Really all I did want was Premium but got Developer for just a bit more money. I am a novice at Office but I guess we all started at sometime. I'm wondering how important they are and if I did'nt install them would my other programs like VSS run ok. I don't have WinNT and with Premium installed I've got what I want for now but I don't know if I'll want more in the future but I'll have a new PC before I learn all of Premium but if I did not have the 2 disks installed when I register could I put them on in the future. I'll start a class about the 4 core programs before long and don't know nothing about SQL and Exchange and how important it would be for me to have them installed. Thanks for any help. Hokiejack

    Re: SQL & Exchange server (2000 Dev./SR1)

The extra goodies that come with Developer edition have nothing to do with registration. Installing the various components is strictly optional. I've never even touched Visual SourceSafe. You'll really only need SQL Server if you plan to develop applications for SQL Server. Otherwise, it's a waste of disk space and resources. As for Exchange Server, you won't be able to install it on Windows98 - It only works on WindowsNT Server (or 2000 Server).

Also, if you DO install SQL Server, you'll need to install the MSDE (Microsoft Data Engine) from one of the other Developer Tools Disks (I think it's the first disk, but I forget).

    Good luck! <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15>

As Mark said, you can't even install Exchange and SQL without having an NT server to install them on - so end of question. They are using for testing solutions you may develop - digital dashboards, outlook forms etc.

since you are a novice at office, you probably should have stopped at installing premium and after working with it, decided if you needed all the extras included with developer. (and the drive space they take up) For a large percentage of users who do some programming, the VBE in office is sufficient.
