Numbering (2000/SR1)

Hiya,
Just arrived on the forum. I've done a couple of searches on Numbering but am yet to find answers to my questions. What are some good keyword searches or URL references to these?
1. Setting up paragraph numbering.
I'm currently using macros and styles to implement paragraph numbering. It works fairly well except in some cases - I've heard using SEQ fields is the "best" way to do this, how can I find out more?
2. Collaboration splats heading numbering.
Reasonably often: if two people are working on two copies of a document with heading numbering (properly set up I think), sometimes pasting the second person's work into the first person's copy completly clears all heading numbering throughout all styles of the document. Best way to recover is then to cross fingers, breathe deeply, go into Styles, Organiser and copy all the heading styles back into the current document from its original template. Anyone seen this? Know how to fix it?

You might also want to read the articles at the Microsystems web site: http://www.microsystems.com/publications.htm

for really solid information on styles and numbering.

Personally, I would stay away from sequence codes.

Re: Numbering (2000/SR1)

(edited broken links; hope they work now)

Hi Steve,

I'd stay away from SEQ fields if you want to collaborate with others on the documents. You can't expect all of them to spend a few hours learning how to use them

There is a standard procedure for setting up heading or list styles, that is pretty often explained in the numbering newsgroup by (if you need restarts) or Suz anne S. Barnhill (the simpler version if you don't need restarts).

Numbering done with styles is pretty stable. If you work with several documents and you have to paste between them, it works best if they are based on the same template (so the heading and list numbering schemes are the same). It still may sometimes be necessary to copy the styles back to the document as you said.

Another way to fix broken numbering (or documents that have been messed up) is to replace list or heading styles with themselves (leave "Find what:" and "Replace with:" empty). But this will also remove any manual restarts.

Automatic numbering is limited to simple, hierarchical numbering schemes. You'll run into problems if you try something fancy (want to skip numbers, have "Heading 1" followed by "Heading 3" some of the time...), so better don't try

You may want to take a gander at Word's Numbering Explained by John McGhie (also in Australia)
