Move rather than Copy on Send (2002)

I have several rules for moving sent messages to particular folders based on the recipients.
What I would like is a rule that simply moves the message, rather that making a copy and leaving another copy in the Sent folder.
Is there an easy answer I'm missing?

on sent items, rules can only copy - but if you run them "offline" (manaully, using the run now option) i think it moves, not copies.

You can, however, use code to create a toolbar button that would Send the message and then let you choose a folder into which to save the message--we call it "Send & File" because it mimics the Send & File button our users were familiar with in the Notes mail client.

I got the code from Sue Mosher's site www.slipstick.com, if you're interested.

Thanks - I'll look into that, but it may defeat my object - I tend to use Alt_S to send for speed.

Ahhh...but you can assign your macro to a keystroke, too, to achieve the same speed. The catch is, you end up with a prompt for each message (asking where it should go), which is obviously slower than rules that fire automatically based on recipient. So it may not be an option for you for other reasons anyway.

Have you tried turning off "Save copy of messages in Sent Items" option and still running the rule?

I'd test that carefully: it might not save a copy at all in that case.

The rule worked for me ... i.e check sent mail - redirect to a specific folder based on condition ... and turn off "Save to sent items" in options ... but I agree with jscher2000, each user should check that it works for them

I did a simple test (OL 2000 SR1a) and it worked for me too. I didn't realize the Rules Wizard knew the contents of a message "after sending" even though it was not saved in the Sent Items folder. Apologies for my undue skepticism (although frankly it still would make me nervous to rely on it...).

Thanks very much, klyjen, for the pointer on this code. <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15>

This seems to deal with all instances of choosing the filing folder - other than when you're sending a file as an attachment from OUTSIDE Outlook. (I haven't tried dabbling with whether automation could enable this situation also. IF I do - and succeed - I'll post back.)

I don't know what you mean by your exception. The code works on messages with file attachments...it just doesn't let you file the sent message in a non-Outlook folder. Is that what you mean?

Re: Move rather than Copy on Send (2002)

No, the other way around: if I choose the "Send As Attachment" option in, say, Word or Excel (or use the right click Send To/Mail Recipient shortcut in Explorer), the MAPI interface files the message in Outlook's Sent Items folder - or by "non-Outlook folder" do you mean non-default folder? (The reference to trying to code automation was only for when using other Office applications.)
