TAB key and Numbered Outlines (Word 97/SR-2)

This is a new one for me...

I go to Format - Bullets and Numbering, click on the Outlined Numbered tab and choose an outline format (I've used both customized and non-customized formats). The numbering starts (with roman numeral "I," for example), and then I press Enter to get down to the next line. I would like this line to contain the next level of numbering so, I press TAB, which should tab in and give me the next level marker (the letter "A," for example). HOWEVER, the TAB key only gives me a default tab rather then giving me the next level marker. I just can't figure it out. And, again, I have tried it with several outline formats and all of them remain at the first level mark. I sure hope this make sense, because I need some assistance! Thanks - any help is appreciated!

    Hi melis415.

Go to Tools| Options| Edit. Look at the "Tabs and backspace set left indent" checkbox, and make sure it's checked--it sounds like it isn't on your machine. Check it, and that should resolve the issue.

    Good luck!

Thanks so much. I was actually checking for this option, saw it was unchecked but then, didn't think another thing about it! Thanks for reminding me what this feature/option does!
