Can't View Network

Just added a new XP home PC to small, mixed network. Really mixed: NT server 95, 98, XP.
I can't see other PCs on net. Workgroup name is OK. I can ping other PCs and router/gateway. WinXP says the network is not available. I added IPX protocol and can now see the other XP PC, which is running IPX. Still can't se the NT server, which is also running IPX.
Any suggestions?

Hi Howard,

Try browsing through this thread and see if it gives you any ideas. I have to confess I immediately thought "NetBEUI" - it's about halfway down the list of posts.

Re: Can't View Network

Mark. thanks for the post. I found that thread using a Search, and while it's very interesting it did not solve the problem. However, I did find the answer. I disabled Norton Internet Security (which had been installed by the user) and Presto, my network view appeared. I reconnected my mapped drives and all is well, even after enabling NIS again. However #2, when I rebooted I lost the network view again. So, I'll keep NIS (2002) disabled until I can find some answers on the Symantec web site.
Anyone reading this thread know about any adverse reactions with NIS and XP?

I do not use Norton Internet Security, but I have heard and read that if the settings are set right it works great. I use ZoneAlarm which is a lot cheaper ( )and have not had any problems.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Can't View Network

Hi Howard,

I have a two computer network at home using IPX. I also have Norton Internet Security and had the same problems you had. When I disabled the NIS the computers could see each other. My computers use fixed IP addresses: 192.168.1.0 and 1. In NIS there is an option to let other IP addresses have access to the computer that NIS is on. I'm not sure where it is located in NIS, but search around, you'll find it.

Re: Can't View Network

Thanks for the replies. I will explore NIS options and see where the problem is. As it turns out, using IP addresses of 192.168.x.x behind the router may eliminate the need for NIS since these are "non-routable" adresses and the router act as a firewall.
