    Formulas (Office 2000)

    How do I make a cell contain a text string where part of the text is in the cell itself but part of the text comes from another cell? eg. "Lunch on Tuesday" where the "Tuesday" comes from another cell and can be readily changed by changing it at the other cell

    In cell A1:

    <pre>="Lunch on "&B1
    </pre>

    Then, just type into cell B1 whatever you want, like "Tuesday" or "the boss" or "the yacht"!

    What if B1 contains a date that is formatted to a certain style. When I try and do what you suggest, I get back a series of numbers. For example, assume B1 contains the date "2/01/2002" formatted to show up as "1-Feb-2002". When I put the reference to B1 in the formula as you suggest, I get back "Lunch on 37288".

    Try using<pre> = "Lunch on " & Text(B1,"d-mmm-yyyy")</pre>

    Dates are numbers and how they are displayed depends on the formatting of the cell. For your purposes you can convert the date to text and apply the formatting you require with the TEXT() function.
