    Template Update (MS Word 97)

I just opened a Document based on a Book Template I created in Word. I added a couple of new Auto Correct Entries and saved the file.

Before the file closed a box appeared with the message: Changes have been made that will affect the Global Template Normal.dot - Do you want to add the changes? yes - no - cancel.

Since this document I had open was based on a Book Template and not Normal.dot - why is Word trying to update Normal.dot when I make changes and close this file?

I'm assuming Word is trying to add the 2 new Auto Correct entries I created to Normal.dot.

Which option should I select? yes no cancel?

    Thanks

Re: Template Update (MS Word 97)

Autocorrect entries are not stored in templates -- except Normal.dot and only there if they contain character and or paragraph formatting (underline, bold, etc.). If they are just straight text, they are stored in:

    Windows NT/2000/(XP?): c:winnt[i]username[/].acl

    Windows 98, 95: c:windowsusername.acl

If you don't log in to Windows the file is named mso97.acl

Sounds like you added autocorrect with formatting. It also sounds like you have the Option box "Prompt to save normal" checked.

Re: Template Update (MS Word 97)

    Hi sclnet.

My understanding is that AutoCorrect entries are always stored in the global template (i.e., normal.dot). [Edited to add: except I'm apparently wrong--AutoCorrect isn't stored there. Oops. Sorry...] AutoText entries, however, can be stored in a document, a document template, or the global template.

So, your assumption is correct--Word is trying to add the 2 new AutoCorrect entries to the normal.dot file. If you want them to be saved, you should say Yes to the prompt.

If what you really want is AutoText (i.e., typing a few letters automatically inserts certain text like a signature block or even a full paragraph of text), those can be stored in your book template by opening the template itself (not a document based on the template) and creating the entries there.

    Hope that helps...

    kEVIN,
You're precisely correct - the Auto Correct Entries are formatted. and Prompt to Save Normal.dot is turned on.

Thanks - I just want to be cautious - I don't want to be modifying Normal.dot too much - if you do it may tend to get corrupted - as I understand it.
