Formula Showing up in Cell (2000 SR-1)

The follow cell formula was working but when I added the -1 after the second search function,
    =IF(ISERROR(SEARCH(" ",B642,1)),B642,LEFT(B642,SEARCH(" ",B642,1)-1))
the formula showes up in the cell instead of the computed value. I've had this problem before
and re-entry or random edits seems to make it go away. (The idea is to strip out the first word
    in B642 seperated by blanks.)

Is there any understanding of what is happing or a workaround that is more robust?

Has the cell been formatted as Text? A cell must be formatted as something other than Text when you enter a formula or the formula is interpreted as test and the formula displays instead of what it evaluates to.

Oh the shame of it all. Having the format in text was the problem.

    Thanks for the insight. --Mark
