What is SMB, NetBIOS, NBT, ...

This article from May 2001 Linux Magazine gives a very good overview of the most used home networking protocol, Microsofts SMB and its variants.

It is not light reading but it does explain a lot of things. This is particularly important as all the comments about Win2000 apply to all default setups for Windows XP Home and many XP Pro networks.

Re: What is SMB, NetBIOS, NBT, ...

Thanks Ian,
I enjoyed the article. Some of it went over my head, some under it, but it answered some questions for me. Plus I actually learned a little too. I've owned more then one computer for years and it often bothered me to have to transfer files by floppy or download to each machine. I still remember how cool it felt the first time some friends from a local bbs all brought their Atari ST's over and we hooked them all together and played games. First time I ever saw any type of net however limited. Then we learned how to rewire a paralell port cable and hook them together for file transfers. Seems like a century ago. :> My first real home net was the most fun for me. Had my bbs and two other computers hooked together and it was fun sitting here playing games or just chatting with the users. I'm rambling along about the days when dos was king. When I just wanted to thank you for all you and the others like you do here for folks like me. We really appreciate it. Now back to learning about XP, and the ole clock keeps on ticking.

The Old One,
