    Extra Menu Items (W2000/Win98SE)

Hello, Why would multiple occurrences of the same menu item appear in my TOOLS menu? To explain, I have just started a new job and the computer I now work on gets multiple (as in 10 or so) occurrences of MAIL MERGE in the TOOLS menu. I use CUSTOMIZE to remove them all bar one, but low and behold after a few days ... the're back!!!!! Now I do not use MAIL MERGE in WORD at all as I use the (substantially inferior) WORDPRO word processing software that is bundled with the Real Estate package that I run. I am constantly merging data into letters that I create and I suspect this has something to do with my problem but I fail to see any connection between WordPro and Word. The office has a small network (3 computers running peer to peer) and I haven't checked whether the 2 other computers have been experiencing the same problem. I will check that out and put it into another post. In the meantime, any clues?

I suspect you have an add-in in Word that is causing the problem. Check your list of add-ins (Tools>Templates & Addins -- for Word 97). Turn off all add-ins, remove the Mail Merge Duplicates and restart Word. Hope that helps.

You might also try renaming your normal.dot file and let Word create a new one.

The Microsoft Works Add-In has been known to do this. Tools => Templates and Add-Ins...

Hi Chas. The only Add-in that is listed is for the accounting software I run (MYOB). Works has been installed on the computer but is rarely used.

You could check your startup folder (find where it is by looking under Tools, Options, File Locations, Startup). Anything there wil be loaded automatically when you start up and if you have an extra normal.dot or something there it will give multiple copies of menu and toolbar items (anything that's been customised, in fact).
